Voltalis Demand Response technology is helping UWTSD reduce carbon emissions without costly infrastructure changes.

The issue

Public sector buildings are essential to the UK’s infrastructure. Yet, these buildings face a growing challenge: reducing energy costs and carbon emissions across a diverse range of old and new buildings.

The University of Wales Trinity Saint David has buildings that are 200 years old, as well as modern buildings. The challenge is how to decarbonise both types of building effectively, especially given the UK's ambitious targets for reducing CO2 emissions (by 50% by 2032 and 75% by 2037 according to the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme). Committed to sustainable development and meeting the government's ambitious targets, the University wanted to equip its student accommodation at the historic Lampeter campus with the Voltalis solution.

The Voltalis solution

A smart, cost-effective solution

Voltalis integrated a completely free device that is compatible with any model of electric radiator, making it intelligent and controllable remotely from a smartphone, tablet or computer.
Voltalis has installed a smart thermostat in more than 100 rooms on campus without having to to replace existing systems.

The student accommodation is now fitted with easy-to-use thermostats that allow radiator consumption to be optimised via control from the dedicated application, as well as through modulation by Voltalis at times when the electrical system needs it. Voltalis provides comprehensive data to track progress towards decarbonisation targets.

Daniel Priddy, Head of Sustainability at UWTSD, explains: "We’re set to see the benefits over the new term: with energy bills going down, progress in our decarbonisation goals and the integration working seamlessly with our other sustainability efforts and wider energy mix reduction."
