Flexibility solutions to support a decarbonised and secure EU electricity system”

European Environment Agency & Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators

Key findings

This joint European Environment Agency / ACER report concludes that EU power-system flexibility must be significantly scaled up this decade to keep pace with the accelerated renewables rollout triggered by the Fit-for-55 targets and the post-2022 energy-security push. The report states that EU electricity system flexibility needs to roughly double by 2030, driven by a near-doubling of the renewables share in generation (from about 22% in 2021 towards the EU’s 42.5% 2030 target, with national plans in some countries implying triple-digit percentage growth in wind and solar specifically).
