Bilbao (ENLIT), 19th November 2025 — Voltalis, European leader in demand-side flexibility, and Virta, a global pioneer in smart electric vehicle (EV) charging, have signed an strategic partnership to expand EV flexibility solutions in Nordic countries and other markets in Europe.
The collaboration especially addresses one of the clean energy transition’s most urgent challenges as EV penetration accelerates faster than grid infrastructure. Intelligent and data driven smart charging has become essential to help grid operators, fleet managers, and property owners optimise charging schedules, support renewable integration, and provide realtime flexibility to balance supply and demand across electricity markets. By automatically modulating electricity consumption in response to grid signals, EVs become active participants in energy systems, balancing supply and demand, absorbing renewable generation, and creating new revenue streams for fleets, building owners, and utilities.
The partnership combines Voltalis’ nearly two decades of expertise aggregating flexible energy assets with Virta’s advanced EV charging platform, spanning over 120,000 charge points and more than 1,000 business customers across 35 countries.
The companies aim to demonstrate measurable grid stability improvements and cost savings for operators through the initial pilot phase. Together, the companies will launch pilot projects in Finland and Sweden, where Virta commands significant market presence, to demonstrate commercial viability and technical interoperability between Voltalis’ VPP (virtual power plant) platform and Virta e-mobility focused VPP capabilities.
Voltalis and Virta will support market evolution for EV flexibility participation in wholesale and balancing markets, working with regulators and grid operators to establish frameworks for smart charging. The collaboration will also share technical and operational knowledge to accelerate integration across France, the UK, and other European markets, creating a blueprint for scalable EV flexibility deployment.
For Voltalis, the partnership accelerates Nordic market entry and extends its demand-side flexibility expertise to e-mobility assets. For Virta, the collaboration broadens the potential applications of its smart-charging platform, while leveraging Voltalis’ proven aggregation capabilities and market participation experience, complementing Virta’s existing customer relationships and service offerings.
“Partnering with a market leader like Virta demonstrates that EVs are far more than mobility assets, they are active contributors to a flexible, resilient, and decarbonised energy system,” said Sébastien Condom, SVP, Head International at Voltalis. “Virta’s leadership in smart charging and V2G innovation, combined with Voltalis’ expertise in demand-side flexibility, makes this collaboration a critical step in integrating transport and energy infrastructure across Europe. We’re not just talking about potential, we’re building the solutions that will deliver grid stability and accelerate decarbonisation today.”
“Virta has years of experience in contributing to power grid resilience via EV charging in the Nordic fast reacting frequency containment and capacity reserve markets. The partnership with Voltalis opens us a new level of ambition in contributing to the energy market transformation, enabling reduction of volatility in electricity prices, which benefits CPOs, fleets and consumers across Europe”, continues Dr. Juha Karppinen, Director of Energy at Virta.
The collaboration establishes a framework for technical and commercial development, exploring new products and solutions that demonstrate how EVs can support grid stability and accelerate Europe’s transition to a cleaner, more flexible energy system.
